Tell us about Stantec’s history

Stantec was founded in Alberta in 1954 as a one-person firm working on water and sewage projects for small municipalities. Today the company has transformed to a 22,000-employee global design and engineering firm with 400 locations across six continents.

Stantec is a diverse company that provides engineering, architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, surveying, environmental sciences, construction management services, project management and project economics services — from initial project concept and planning through to design, construction, commissioning, maintenance, decommissioning and remediation. Our work is driven by a dedication to making a difference in the communities we serve.

Our more than 800 oil and gas engineering, procurement and construction management personnel have experience designing some of North America’s most significant pipelines, facilities, terminals and refineries as well as processing plants and field facilities.

Stantec has eleven indigenous partnerships across Canada. These partnerships help us understand the intricacies, history and traditions of the communities we work in. They also help us share our expertise with local professionals who want to work in our industry.

How familiar is Stantec with pipeline and or terminal construction?

With more than 25 years in the industry, Stantec creates connections that are built to last. Stantec has completed extensive pipeline and terminal construction work throughout North America. We have worked on more than 25,000 kilometers of pipeline, two million horsepower of compression and pump stations capable of millions of barrels of storage capacity.

Could you talk a bit more about construction monitoring, who is qualified to do it and the kinds of skills required for the job?

The inspectors and monitors are highly-trained specialists in their fields, which include welding, coating, damage prevention, health & safety, environmental, and project controls to name a few.

Indigenous monitors work on-site alongside the environmental inspectors — monitoring and reporting on environmental, cultural and archaeological aspects of the project and focusing on traditional land and marine resource use.
