As part of our work to prepare for construction of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project in Kamloops, Trans Mountain Resource Specialists are salvaging cryptogamic crust in Kenna Cartwright Park. Cryptogamic crust is made up of mosses, lichens, algae, and bacteria which are important for building soil and promoting plant growth.

In order to salvage the crust, our crews access sites within Kenna Cartwright Park identified during Project planning using motorized vehicles and by foot. Hand tools are used to gently remove crust material which is then transferred to a secure storage location until the reclamation phase of the Project.

After construction in the area is complete, the salvaged cryptogamic crust will then be replaced in the areas of the Park disturbed during construction. Cryptogamic crust salvage is one of many specialized reclamation activities we undertake as part of the Expansion Project.
