Construction of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project in this area includes Spread 2 pipeline construction and the expansion of four pump stations.

Spread 2 Pipeline Construction
Pipeline construction will be undertaken in a series of phased events from Highway 60 in Parkland County extending west along the Yellowhead Highway past Hinton. The majority of the construction will follow conventional pipeline construction techniques, with trenchless techniques being used in eight areas including crossings of the McLeod River, Wolf Creek and Pembina River. In these locations, a horizontal directional drill (HDD) will be used to minimize impacts and disruption to these areas. We’ll work with our contractors to limit noise, dust and night lighting during construction to minimize disruption to our neighbours.
Spread 2 pipeline construction includes:
- Approximately 285 km of pipeline construction
- Eight trenchless crossings, including seven HDDs and one Direct Pipe Injection
Trans Mountain’s construction contractor for Spread 2 pipeline construction is Midwest Pipelines Inc.. Midwest began in 2012 under private ownership by Albertans and has grown into one of the leading pipeline construction contractors in Western Canada. Midwest is focused on building mid- to large-diameter new pipelines similar in scope to the Trans Mountain Expansion Project.
Pump stations
Cord will be responsible for undertaking work at four pump stations within this region. Pump stations contain electric motors that drive the pumps to maintain the pressure and flow rate in the pipeline. The expansion of these facilities will add an additional pump station within the existing footprint of four of our pump stations including;
- Gainford
- Wolf
- Edson
- Hinton
